James Gardner

My name is James. I am 8 years old. Having Starr Hailey Campbell for my grandma, I guess I was destined to like family history. When I was three, I went on my first cemetery trip. Grandma was looking for unusual headstones for a class she was giving.

I love looking at headstones. I like to see what is carved on them and I like to touch them and feel the different kinds of stone they are made from.

We have no family buried in Utah, so my grandma started taking us to other cemeteries close by to take care of graves nobody else does. Her friend Sharon made a list of things that you take to the cemetery in your cemetery kit. Grandma changed it a little so that it would be better for kids. My brother, sister, and I all have our own. My baby sister will get one next year.

I am very lucky because my great grandma is still living. She can tell me all kinds of stories about life when she was a little girl. She lived in Kansas. Her dad had a dry cleaning shop. That’s where you take your really special clothes that can’t be washed in a washing machine. I like to just talk to her.

A few weeks ago grandma took me to a cemetery to look for someone to do some research on. I found a lot of Butterfield’s. There is a canyon that my dad loves that is called Butterfield, so I picked this family to research. I haven’t had time yet to do much but I already know that Thomas Jefferson Butterfield founded Herriman, Utah and Butterfield Canyon from information on his headstone and a monument.

I also liked the statues in this cemetery. They were there to honor the first people to the area and the veterans buried in the cemetery. I’ll keep you posted on my research.
